Rights Respecting School

What are children’s rights?

All human beings – adults and children alike – are entitled to basic human rights.  Children have a particular set of rights due to their vulnerability and need for protection.  The UNCRC sets out the rights that must be realised for children to develop to their full potential, free from hunger and want, neglect and abuse.  These rights are not something that children need to earn or that adults and governments can take away as a punishment.  They contain the basic protection and support that all children are entitled to.  All children have the same rights, no matter what their background or where they live.

Raffi the Rights Respecting Robin

Raffi is our Rights Respecting Robin.  He helps children in school and visitors to know about children’s rights.  Watch out for him on displays around school!  Raffi also likes to play outside.  At Anston Park Infant School we know that all children have the right to join in.  Children who find themselves alone at playtime can go and sit next to Raffi on the bench and someone will come and play with them.

Achieving the Level 1 Award

Bev Noble from UNICEF came to assess our school for the level 1 award.  She spent a full day at our school being shown around by the children.  She observed an assembly and watched a Reception class being taught about their right to be healthy.  Bev spoke to the children and asked them lots of questions.  She also held a meeting with members of staff and the steering group to talk about the impact of the rights respecting initiative on our school as a whole.  Bev then looked through our folder of evidence and talked to class teachers and Mrs. Tyler.  She then announced that we had been awarded level 1 and the children were the first ones to find out!

All children in school in July, 2014 were rewarded with a level 1 rights respecting school badge for all of their hard work.  This is also to show everyone who visits our school that we are aware of children’s rights.

Reception children

The Reception children join Anston Park Infant School begin their rights respecting school journey.  They will go on Raffi hunts, talk about wants and needs, create their class charter and be introduced to rights respecting language.
